Brief History of CMA Canada (Saskatchewan)

In March of 1948, the Provincial Legislature of Saskatchewan passed a Bill to incorporate The Society of Industrial and Cost Accountants of Saskatchewan for the Regina-Moose Jaw Chapter. The first provincial officers of the Society were Mr. A. Stewart, as Chairman, and Mr. R. B. VanIderstine, as Secretary. There were a total of 39 charter members at the time of incorporation. In the Spring of 1949, the Saskatoon Chapter was formed, at which time the Board of Directors was elected.

Society business was conducted at volunteers' homes, as the Society did not have a provincial office until 1963, when an office was set up at the Northern Crown Building in Regina.  In the 1960's the number of student enrollments mushroomed to 300.  Saskatchewan hosted its first of three National Conferences in June of 1965.

The 1970's were a period of growth and development for The Society of Industrial Accountants, as it was then called. In 1971 there were 110 members and in 1981 there were 327.

On July 1, 1985, the designation changed from "RIA - Registered Industrial Accountant" to "CMA - Certified Management Accountant" and to its current name - The Society of Management Accountants of Saskatchewan.

The first offering of the National Entrance Exam was in June of 1991 and Saskatchewan led the nation with an 81% pass rate. The first Provincial Conference was also held that year in Waskesiu.

In the late 1990's the Society made the transition to a professionally driven organization and addressed issues of governance. As well, the Society implemented the new national entrance requirement which was phased in by the year 2000.   Then in 2006, the CMA program was revised to meet the standard of the new competency map.

The preceding history includes only highlights of the changes, activities and accomplishments of the Saskatchewan Society and its members. There is no doubt that the major reason why the Society has been so successful is because of the strong commitment of its members who have worked extremely hard on its behalf.

The Society of Management Accountants of Saskatchewan celebrated its 60th Anniversary in March 2008!  Congratulations CMA Saskatchewan!
